TRIPLICATE ~ progressive jazzTRIPLICATE, a progressive jazz trio, is seen on several stages throughout the Twin Cities. They became a band more by accident than design. Their repertoire was formed from casual jam sessions and a desire to stretch, burn and play nice melodies. Tight arrangements range from works by composers like Charles Mingus, John McLaughlin and Miles Davis, to a growing body of original compositions, that all are given the "Triplicate Treatment" - blending modern attitude and hard hitting traditional energy with a soft spot for dark melodies to produce funky music that rocks and swings hard. In the fall of 1998, TRIPLICATE was featured in the Jazz Is Cool music education series sponsored by The American Federation of Musicians Union Local #30-73, and The Twin Cities Jazz Society, performing concerts and clinics at various Twin Cities high schools. In May 2001, TRIPLICATE was nominated for two Minnesota Music Awards in the Best Jazz Band and Best Jazz Recording categories. |

The Ellen Lease/Pat Moriarty Quintet ~ free jazzThe Ellen Lease/Pat Moriarty Quintet are the veterans of the Free Jazz scene who have been honing their ensemble skills, developing their repertoire, and thrilling club and concert audiences in the Minneapolis area for more than a decade. Award-winning composers Ellen Lease and Pat Moriarty contribute strong, highly colored works to the bands repertoire. From the soaring, dream-like lines of "Chance, Love, Logic" to the wide-angle post-bop energy of "Orange" to the pretzel logic of "Phrenology" to the spiritual stasis of "The Cloisters", the quintet deftly mines both the literal and intuitive implications of these compositions. This is a band that believes in continuity. Lease and Moriarty have collaborated on many projects since the early 80's; the newest member of the group joined in 2003. Through the consistency of personnel and a stable but expanding repertoire the quintet has developed a high level of group interplay and risk-taking within the structures of the tunes. Although comparisons to the musics of Steve Lacy, Charles Mingus, and the Art Ensemble of Chicago are well taken, this band definitely has its own sound and conception. The quintet features: Ellen Lease on piano, Pat Moriarty on alto saxophone, Chris Bates on bass, Kelly Rossum on trumpet, David Stanoch on drums and percussion. |

Sometimes Y ~ alternative/rockThis four piece band has a dance/rock style that is innovative and enjoyable. Formed in 1981 in Madison, WI by songwriter/guitarist Dave Reiss and bassist Sue Smoleroff (now married living in the Twin Cities) earned a loyal following. Gigs and recordings with REM, Replacements, Tom Verlaine and others resulted in the release of One Fell Swoop in 1984. It was produced and recorded at Smart Studios by Butch Vig and featured Paul Westerberg, Wally Ingram, Steve Marker and Duke Erickson from Garbage and numerous others. It was voted album of the year by the L.A. Times and promoted by everyone from John Peel to Nico of Velvet Underground. Soon after, the band retreated to raise a family but the songwriting continued. In early 2004, their much anticipated new recording Be Happy was released. Drummer Dave Stanoch and fiddle player Eric Thomas joins Dave and Sue in this original rock-and-roll band and is performing around the Twin Cities in clubs such as The Fine Line and 400 Bar. |
