Chapter 3 ~ Selected Rudimental Variations

Long Roll Variations are the true foundations of all rudiments. A long roll is a continuous repetition of strokes, creating a drone, typically lasting over one or more bars of music. The standard combinations are the single-stroke, buzz-stroke, double-stroke and triple-stroke rolls.

Paradiddle Stickings are extremely versatile rudimental variations. Like the long roll variations, they are foundations that all other rudiments are built on. The combinations also contain very musical rhythmic textures from hand to hand.

Flam and Drag Rudiments are similar in their usage as embellishments applied to rudimental long or measured rolls and paradiddle variations. They also both offer phrasing flexibility in the space between the grace and primary strokes.

Four and Five-Stroke Ruffs extend further the sequence of embellishing a primary single stroke that begins with the two-note combination of the flam, and the three-note combination of a drag. There are a variety of ways to interpret these strokes rhythmically. Their length also provides options for use as a measured type of four or five-stroke roll.
